Pistons renounce rights to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, making him an unrestricted free agent

The Detroit Pistons have renounced their rights to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. He is now an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team he chooses.

Pope was a restricted free agent garnering max contract consideration across the league after showing promise as a young, serviceable two-way wing in his fourth season. He averaged 13.8 points on sub-.400 shooting from the field but was tasked with defending the opposing team’s best player on a nightly basis.

Detroit — saddled in luxury tax with more than $66 million committed to Andre Drummond, Reggie Jackson, Tobias Harris and Jon Leuer for next season alone — was expected to match any competing offers on Pope. The collective bargaining agreement allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own players; not so much with other free agents.

Since the Spurs are still reportedly interested in signing him, this is bizarre. By renouncing Simmons, they immediately lose leverage with him and against the rest of the league. Other teams can negotiate with Simmons at their preferred price, rather than negotiate with him at a price they believe the Spurs wouldn’t match. It would make sense that Simmons would stay somewhat loyal to San Antonio, the team that discovered him and a stellar franchise.

If San Antonio didn’t plan on re-signing Simmons, they still didn’t need to renounce him. He would have been free to sign elsewhere, and the Spurs just wouldn’t have matched. In fact, this Cheap Moto X Jerseys would hurt Cheap Miami Heat Jerseys Simmons’ leverage to get more money with other teams if this were the case.

Either way, it’s a strange situation for Simmons. Last year, the 6’6 guard Cheap Miami Dolphins Jerseys played 78 games, averaging about 18 minutes and six points on 42 percent shooting.

Derrick Rose wants to remain with the Knicks, his agent says

Derrick Rose’s agent B.J. Armstrong insisted the three-time NBA All-Star wants to stay with the Knicks, despite being included in trade negotiations.

Rose was traded by the Bulls in June but the former MVP point guard has not completely convinced people in New York, having angered Knicks officials when he missed last month’s loss to the Pelicans without informing the team.

The 28-year-old Chicago native was subject to trade interest before the deadline, but Armstrong reiterated Rose’s desire to remain at Madison Square Garden.

The consensus among front office executives who discussed the matter with USA TODAY Sports this week was that his draft stock won’t be harmed by his father’s controversial style. As one general manager put it, and many other executives confirmed in various forms when consulted on the matter, “No one’s paying attention to Ball’s father.”

Warriors coach Steve Kerr expressed that LaVar’s comments aren’t helping Cheap Los Angeles Dodgers Jerseys his sons. “I think it’d be better for them if they can just play and have fun and not have to hear that every day,” Kerr said.

Others don’t see the harm.

“There are players who come from more challenging family situations Cheap Miami Heat Jerseys who have (done) quite well in the NBA,” an unidentified general manager told USA Today.

Another unnamed NBA executive added, “Passing on the kid because of the father may not hold up well over time.”

Lonzo is expected to declare for the NBA Draft after this season and is a consensus top-five pick in the upcoming lottery. His brothers, high schoolers LiAngelo and LaMelo, have committed to follow Lonzo’s footsteps to UCLA.
