Red Wings’ Gustav Nyquist given six-game suspension for high stick

Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist has been suspended six games for a high stick to the face of Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced its decision Wednesday, citing the “dangerous” and “retaliatory” nature of the incident for the length of the ban.

Nyquist had been offered an in-person hearing, allowing the league to suspend him for six or more games. He opted instead for a phone hearing Wednesday morning.

The play occurred at the 14:13 mark of the first period in Sunday’s 6-3 Wild win when Nyquist was involved in a scrum along the side boards. Spurgeon skated up from behind and knocked Nyquist to the ice with a cross-check to the back. Nyquist then appeared to deliberately use his stick to retaliate, striking Spurgeon violently across the upper lip and cheek, drawing blood.

The Islanders currently play at Barclays’ Center, but Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, which manages the arena, is expected to terminate the team’s lease. The 2018-19 season could be the Isles’ last in Brooklyn.

NHL rules allow the owner of one team to have a stake in another, so there’s no cross-ownership issue preventing Dolan from being part of the investor group.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is involved in the arena talks Wholesale NFL Jerseys Supply and is looking to improve infrastructure around the proposed site, Bloomberg notes.

At least two other markets covet the Islanders. Dannel Malloy, the governor of Cheap MLB Jerseys Connecticut, wrote a letter to the team’s owners earlier this month making a case for his state as the team’s home, and some Long Island politicians want the Isles to return to their original home. Also, the Islanders were in discussions with the Mets about building an arena near Citi Field.

But the focus is now on the site in Elmont, N.Y., near Belmont Park, according to Bloomberg. The site is controlled by the New York Racing Association.
